How does AI decide which local businesses to recommend?
Short answerNo AI company publishes its recipe, but the pattern is consistent. Assistants name businesses they can find, verify from more than one source and describe confidently. That usually means a complete Google listing, a clear website, consistent details across the web, and genuine reviews and mentions.
What assistants appear to use
- Listings: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and directories. See which listings AI uses.
- Your website: if crawlers can read it and it states your services, area and hours in plain text.
- Reviews and mentions: an analysis by Peec AI of 30 million citations found assistants lean on review sites, Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and editorial sources, and that different assistants favour different ones.
- Consistency: the same name, address, phone and hours everywhere. Conflicts make AI hedge or leave you out.
What you can't control
The assistant's own wording, which competitors it prefers, and what changes after an update. Anyone who promises otherwise is guessing.

Questions people ask
Does the closest business always win?
Not always. For local questions distance matters, but completeness, reviews and clear information also seem to matter. Results vary by assistant.
